On Twitter, the morning of 29th September 2015, after our President addressed the UN, the trending topics are Mugabe, Ministerial List and Everton.
However everywhere I look at the United Nations General Assembly...I see Kenya and Kenyatta...It’s not he is signing more deals, or attending more meetings than Nigeria, but his press team is very professional and savvy. Before he traveled they listed his itinerary, daily at the UNGA they update what he is doing, and deals signed.
Look at the India delegation, their President visited Google, Tesla, Facebook etc they announced big deal eg Google to install WiFi in all Indian major train stations. These deals are possible because the Indian government has tapped into her large diaspora of Indians in the US to facilitate trade deals.
Kenya has tapped in the Obama halo, India has tapped into her diaspora in Silicon Valley...We can learn a thing or two from this.
In today’s world, Kim Kardashian has more twitter followers than CNN…that our reality.
There are too many nations in Africa competing for attention, we cannot sit back and assume investment will come to us because we have a large population…no we must create our own thunder.
One thing we must do is project Nigeria positively, in smart ways. We must also lean to link our competitive advantage to attack positive press and then use that attention to attract business. We have Nollywood, let’s use that industry smartly. We cannot just attend conferences, and return, we should attend and create jobs back home.
Next week the UNGA will be a memory, but Kenya just signed a $5b deal with China. However it won’t be a memory to the millions of Kenyans that will get jobs
